Steel room dividers

A steel room divider is a floor-to-ceiling glazed steel partition used to zone an open-plan space, such as separating a sleeping area in a loft or a study corner in a living room. It gives the room a defined edge and some sound separation while keeping sightlines and daylight open.

How steel room dividers work

Room dividers tend to be larger than a standard screen and often run the full width of a room, so we design them with intermediate posts and transoms that carry the glass weight and keep the bars in proportion. Where there is no wall to fix to, the divider can be anchored to the floor and ceiling structure.

In lofts and converted buildings we survey for uneven floors, sloping ceilings and exposed beams, then scribe the frame to suit. A divider can include a hinged door, a sliding leaf or simply an open walkway at one end.

What you can specify

  • Full-height glazed steel partitions up to around 3m in a single tier
  • Transoms and posts set out to suit the room rather than a stock grid
  • Fixings into floor and ceiling structure where there is no wall
  • Optional hinged, sliding or pivot door within the divider
  • Scribed to sloping ceilings, beams and out-of-level floors
  • Toughened or laminated safety glass, clear or reeded
  • Any RAL powder-coat colour, textured black as standard

Questions about steel room dividers

How much does a steel room divider cost?

Most full-height steel room dividers fall between £4,500 and £11,000 fitted, including VAT. Wider dividers, extra doors and specialist glass add to the price.

Can a room divider go under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We measure the pitch on survey and draw the top of the frame to follow it, so the divider fits a loft or attic room without gaps.

Does a glass divider help with noise?

It reduces noise compared with an open room, and laminated acoustic glass with sealed joints improves it further. It will not match a solid insulated wall, and we explain the difference before you choose.

Can the divider be moved later?

Dividers are fixed to the floor and ceiling, so they are permanent fixtures. They can be taken down by a fitter, but they are not designed as movable partitions.

Do I need a door in the divider?

Not always. Many clients leave an open walkway at one end. If you want privacy or warmth in one zone, a hinged or sliding door can be built into the run.

Will a divider make my room feel smaller?

Because the glass panes are large and the bars are slim, a divider keeps the sense of space. Most people find it makes an open-plan room easier to use rather than smaller.
