Staircase steel screens
A staircase steel screen is a glazed steel partition that replaces a solid wall or balustrade beside a staircase. It lets light from a landing window or rooflight travel down into a narrow hall, and it can follow the rake of the stairs.

How staircase steel screens work
Terraced and townhouse halls are often the darkest part of the home. Opening the stair wall with a glazed steel screen is one of the most effective ways to fix that, because daylight from the top of the house can finally reach the ground floor.
Stair screens need careful design. Glass beside a stair must meet guarding and safety-glass rules, and in houses with a floor more than 4.5m above ground the stair is usually a protected escape route, which means the screen may need to be fire-rated. We check the layout at survey and design to suit.
What you can specify
- Raked frames that follow the pitch of the stair
- Safety glass sized for guarding where the screen protects a drop
- Fire-rated glass and frames where the stair is an escape route
- Full-height or half-height screens with handrail details
- Black or any RAL powder coat
- Survey of stringers, nosings and landings for fixings
- Coordination with building control where approval is needed

Questions about staircase steel screens
How much does a staircase steel screen cost?
Most non-fire-rated stair screens cost £3,500 to £8,500 fitted, including VAT. Raked shapes and full-height glazing add complexity, and fire-rated screens are priced individually.
Does a stair screen need to be fire-rated?
In many houses with three or more storeys the stair is a protected escape route, so glazing beside it must give fire resistance. Two-storey houses often do not need it. We confirm this at survey and with your building control body.
Can the screen follow the angle of the stairs?
Yes. We measure the pitch and draw raked frames so the glazing bars line up with the stair rather than stepping awkwardly.
Is glass beside stairs safe?
We use safety glass sized for the loads involved, and where the screen protects a drop it is designed as guarding to the required height.
Can you replace banisters with a glazed screen?
Often, yes. A glazed screen can replace a balustrade or a stud wall. We check the fixing points on the stair structure before confirming the design.
Will a stair screen make my hallway lighter?
If there is a window or rooflight at the top of the stairs, yes. The screen lets that light travel down instead of stopping at the stair wall.
