Steel window refurbishment
Steel window refurbishment is the repair of existing metal windows rather than replacing them: treating rust, repairing damaged sections, freeing seized opening lights, renewing hinges, handles and seals, reglazing and recoating. It is often the right choice for listed buildings and windows that are worn but structurally sound.

How steel window refurbishment works
Original steel windows usually fail at the bottom rails and where water has sat in the glazing rebate. Where the steel is still sound, those areas can be cleaned back, repaired and protected, and opening lights can be made to close properly again.
Refurbishment can be done in situ or by removing opening lights for workshop repair. Single glazing can be replaced with slim units where the sections allow, or secondary glazing can be added inside to improve warmth without changing the outside.

Questions about steel window refurbishment
How much does steel window refurbishment cost?
Refurbishment typically costs £350 to £900 per window, including VAT, depending on condition and how much repair the sections need.
Can old steel windows be made draught-proof?
Draught seals and adjusted opening lights make a big difference. For more warmth, slim double-glazed units or secondary glazing can be added.
Is refurbishment suitable for listed buildings?
Often it is the preferred approach, because it keeps original fabric. We can provide a condition report to support your discussions with the conservation officer.
How long does refurbishment last?
Properly treated and recoated steel windows can give many more years of service, especially if the paint is maintained.
When is replacement better than repair?
When sections are badly corroded, bent or missing, repair can cost more than heritage replacement. We tell you honestly which makes sense.
Do you refurbish windows in occupied homes?
Yes. We work room by room and make each opening weathertight at the end of each day.
