Fire-rated steel screens

A fire-rated steel screen is a glazed steel partition designed to resist the spread of fire and, depending on its rating, heat for a set period such as 30 or 60 minutes. Its performance comes from the whole tested assembly, so the frame, glass, seals and fixings all have to match the tested system.

How fire-rated steel screens work

Fire-rated screens are needed on protected escape routes, such as the stair in a three-storey house or the corridors in commercial buildings. A standard screen with fire glass in it is not the same thing: the rating applies to the complete tested system, installed as tested.

We specify fire-rated steel systems that have been tested as complete assemblies, and we supply the manufacturer's evidence of performance with your quote so your building control body or fire engineer can check it. Fire-rated doorsets are supplied complete with frame, seals, hinges, closer and ironmongery.

What you can specify

  • Integrity (E) and insulation (EI) ratings to suit the route
  • Complete tested systems: frame, glass, seals and fixings
  • Manufacturer evidence of performance supplied with quote
  • Doorsets complete with closers and ironmongery
  • Coordination with building control and fire engineers
  • Residential protected stairs and commercial corridors
  • Black or RAL powder coat within the tested finish range

Questions about fire-rated steel screens

When do I need a fire-rated glazed screen?

When the screen forms part of a protected escape route or a fire-separating wall, such as the stair enclosure in many three-storey houses or a commercial corridor. Your building control body or fire engineer confirms the rating needed.

What do E30 and EI30 mean?

E is integrity, meaning the screen stops flames and hot gases passing through. EI adds insulation, meaning the unexposed side stays below a temperature limit. The number is the period in minutes.

Can you put fire glass into my existing screen?

No. Fire performance comes from the tested system as a whole, so the frame, glass, seals and fixings must all match the tested assembly.

Do you provide certification?

We supply fire-rated systems tested by their manufacturers and pass on the evidence of performance, including certificate references, with your quote.

How much does a fire-rated steel screen cost?

Fire-rated screens are priced per project, and typical screens fall between £5,000 and £14,000 fitted, including VAT, depending on size and rating.

Are fire-rated screens much thicker?

Frames and glass are a little deeper than non-rated screens, but steel systems keep the bars slim compared with most alternatives.
