Heritage steel window replacement
Heritage steel window replacement means removing failing original metal windows, typically from the 1920s to 1950s, and fitting new steel windows that copy their slim sections, glazing-bar patterns and opening lights. It keeps the character of an Art Deco or interwar house while adding double glazing.

How heritage steel window replacement works
Many interwar homes still have their original steel windows, often described as Crittall-style after the best-known historic maker. After decades of rust and draughts, replacement with uPVC can ruin the look of the house. Modern heritage steel sections keep the proportions and the horizontal glazing bars that define these homes.
If the house is listed or in a conservation area with an Article 4 direction, you may need consent before changing the windows. We provide drawings and specifications to support an application and can match curved corner bays and original bar patterns.

Questions about heritage steel window replacement
How much does it cost to replace old steel windows?
Like-for-like heritage steel windows usually cost £1,600 to £4,000 per window fitted, including VAT. Curved corner bays and complex patterns are quoted individually.
Do I need permission to replace steel windows?
If the house is listed you will need listed building consent, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that control window changes. Otherwise replacement is usually permitted, subject to building regulations.
Can you match curved Art Deco bay windows?
Yes. Curved and corner bays can be made in steel to follow the original radius and bar layout.
Are you connected to Crittall?
No. Crittall is a registered trademark of Crittall Windows Ltd. We use the term Crittall-style to describe the slim steel look; Steel Screens UK is independent and not affiliated with Crittall Windows Ltd.
Should I repair or replace my steel windows?
If the frames are structurally sound, refurbishment can be cheaper and keeps original fabric. If sections are badly corroded or distorted, replacement is usually better value. We advise after inspecting them.
Will new heritage windows be warmer?
Yes. Modern sections with double-glazed units are far warmer and less draughty than original single-glazed steel windows.
